KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dillon Mitchell recorded 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Day Day Thomas scored 21 as No. 13 seed Cincinnati defeated No. 12 seed Oklahoma State 87-68 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament on Tuesday.

Josh Reed added 19 points, and Dan Skillings Jr. contributed 13, helping the Bearcats (18-14) advance to face fifth-seeded Iowa State in the second round on Wednesday. Cincinnati, which had struggled in conference play after a strong start to the season, took control early, leading 38-26 at halftime and never allowing Oklahoma State to cut the deficit to single digits.

The Cowboys (15-17) played most of the game without leading scorer and rebounder Abou Ousmane, who fouled out after just nine minutes and finished with four points and one rebound. Connor Dow led Oklahoma State with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Cincinnati pulled away with a 9-0 run early in the second half, capped by consecutive layups off turnovers. Oklahoma State also hurt itself with two technical fouls, including one on Ousmane that contributed to his early exit.

Cincinnati likely needs multiple wins—or a conference tournament title—to secure an NCAA Tournament berth. The loss marked Oklahoma State coach Steve Lutz’s first career conference tournament defeat after an 8-0 record in previous seasons with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky.

Cincinnati will face 12th-ranked Iowa State in the second round on Wednesday.
